Bookish Mardi: Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist
"When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." - Paulo Coelho

Book Summary
While sleeping near a sycamore tree in the sacristy of an abandoned church, Santiago, a shepherd boy, has a recurring dream about a child who tells him that he will find a hidden treasure if he travels to the Egyptian pyramids. An old woman tells Santiago that this dream is prophetic and that he must follow its instructions. Santiago is uncertain, however, since he enjoys the life of a shepherd.
Next Santiago meets a mysterious old man who seems able to read his mind. This man introduces himself as Melchizedek, or the King of Salem. He tells Santiago about good and bad omens and says that it is the shepherd boy's duty to pursue his Personal Legend. Melchizedek then gives Santiago two stones, Urim and Thummim, with which to interpret omens.
Santiago wavers briefly before selling his flock and purchasing a ticket to Tangier, in northern Africa, to which he travels by boat. Shortly after he arrives there, a thief steals all of Santiago's money, so the shepherd boy decides to look for a way to make enough money to return home. He finds work in the shop of a crystal merchant, where Santiago makes improvements that reap considerable financial rewards.
After eleven months of working in the shop, Santiago is unsure of how to proceed. Should he return to Andalusia a rich man and buy more sheep? Or should he cross the vast Sahara in pursuit of the hidden treasure of his dreams? He joins a caravan traveling to Egypt.
Santiago meets an Englishman who wants to learn the secret of alchemy, or turning any metal into gold, from a famous alchemist who lives at an oasis on the way to the pyramids. While traveling, Santiago begins listening to the desert and discovering the Soul of the World. The caravan eventually reaches the oasis, and there Santiago meets an Arab girl named Fatima and falls in love with her instantly. The caravan leader gathers the travelers together and tells them that tribal warfare prevents them from continuing their journey.
Santiago wanders from the oasis into the desert and, seeing two hawks fighting in the sky, has a vision of an army entering the oasis. Because attacking an oasis is a violation of the rules of the desert, Santiago shares his vision with the oasis's tribal chieftain. Soon afterward, Santiago is confronted by a black-garbed, veiled stranger with a sword, who sits atop a white horse. It is the alchemist. The tribal chieftain arms his men, and they are well-prepared when the oasis is indeed invaded. The alchemist offers to cross the desert with Santiago.
Soon the two men enter into an area of intense tribal warfare. Warriors hold the two men captive, but eventually allow them to continue their journey. The alchemist tells Santiago that he needs to return to the oasis, and that the rest of the trip is Santiago's to make alone so that he can claim his Personal Legend.
Santiago arrives at the Egyptian pyramids and begins to dig. He finds nothing buried in the ground. Thieves beat Santiago and rob him of his money. After he tells them of his dream, though, one of the thieves recounts his own dream about a buried treasure in the sacristy of an abandoned church.
Returning to Andalusia, Santiago goes back to the church where he dreamed of the treasure near the pyramids. He digs where he slept, beneath a sycamore tree, and there it is: Santiago's treasure.

Old Man: It's a book that says says the same thing almost all the other books in the world say. It describes people's inability to choose their own destinies. And ends up saying that everyone believes the world's greatest lie.
Santiago:What's the world's greatest lie?
Old Man: It's this: that at certain point in our lives, we lose control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That't the world's greatest lie.

Later, we simply let life proceed, in its own direction, toward its own fate. But, unfortunately, very few follow the path laid out for them - the path to their destinies, and to happiness. Most people see the world as a threatening place, and, because they do, the world turns our to be a threatening place." - The Alchemist

Santiago: Why don't people's heart tell them to continue to follow their dreams?
The Alchemist: Because that what makes a heart suffer the most, and hearts don't like to suffer.

"What you still need to know is this: before a dream is realized, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way. It does this not because it is evil, but so that we can, in addition to realizing our dreams, master the lessons we've learned as we've moved toward that dream.  That's the point at which most people give up. Our relationship, I felt a heaviness in my chest, was beginning to feel like the spinning movement of a child's top. When we were together, we had the power to keep it spinning, and the result was beauty and magic and almost childlike sense of wonder; when we separated, the spinning began inevitably to slow. Reunion Schmeunion ^_^

Christopher, Jonisis, yours truly ^^, Annielyn, Elizabeth, Maeshielle, Roan, Mark  O., Mark B., Louis, John Rey, and Patrick (Photo: Alejandro) @ Celtic Lounge on our 4th Reunion
“The sweetness of reunion is the joy of heaven.”  Richard Paul Evans

It's hard to come to grip with the past. The thought may welcome us with our very good friend/s way back or to some unlikable and dangerous enemies. It can even be both at the same time, something of which occasions like class reunions abundantly remind us.

Juvanne, Patrick, Mark O., Alejandro, Josephine, yours truly ^^, Roan and Annielyn @ Regina Swimming Pool
When you attended school in a community that easily could pass, the drama and subtext of youth can easily be played out all over again. Those you knew as children are now grown men and women, with families, jobs, marriages, mortgages and all the other attendant responsibilities of adulthood that once seemed so far off but are now the facts of everyday life.

Kapoy nah'g ngalan ani nila. :D
Reunion is a time when romances are rekindled, scores are settled, and grudges  are forgiven. It is when people can quickly fall back into long, old forgotten patterns that for a brief moment are all too familiar once again. Reunion is a trip back in time where the anxieties of the present can be made to disappear, only to be replaced by the anxieties of the past which, no longer important, and are now much easier to handle.
People grow. People change. Yet there is an innate sense of self that is always there which reunions can bring out in ways that years of therapy cannot. The girl whom you loved silently from afar is happy to see you and quite interested in what has happened in your life. The boy who was your teenaged passion is now grown and bald and overweight and you cannot for the life of you remember why you were ever together and so many other blah blah blah.... The teacher who had a major influence in your life barely remembers you at all. hahahah! We come to such events not knowing what to expect and can be surprised at the outcome. It is an escape from daily life that produces shadows and illusions of what might have been had only.
Christopher, Mario, Pricy, Apple 'n Annabie @ Regina Swimming Pool on THEIR ( ky wa ko nakabalo aning panahona) 3rd Reunion
Reunion is also a reminder that material success is not an absolute pathway to happiness. That is a lie repeated daily by an entertainment culture that shows a marked preference for reigning in Hell over serving in Heaven.

Happiness comes from success but from success of different types. A quiet life of intellectual pursuits which may not provide much in the way of economic reward can, for the right person, be the source of abundant joy. Children can be a source of a joy so tremendous that they are inarguable worth all the sacrifices required to get them off the launching pad of life.
Mark O., Mikko, Juvanne, Christopher, Webster, and Mario

Nothing is for certain. Good girls go bad. Bad boys do good. The unhappy find peace and the restless settle. Hope is not a "thing with feathers" but seeing how your classmates have turned out, for good and for bad.

Roan, yours truly ^^, Aries, Stellar, Alejandro, Mark P., Josephine, Carmel (sorry sa blurry hahahah!) @ Gat's Bar on our 4th Reunion

You cannot escape the past and you cannot relive it. You can, however, enjoy it. So to IV-Jade class of Ozamiz City National High School 2006 of which is composed of greatly unique individuals, here's a tap on all of our shoulders for being able to reconnect and re-establish our long forgotten good old days, and for making the bond thicker than what it had been before. Indeed I am proud to know each of you, for you had taken your own minute ways of making me the person that I am today! Let's look forward for the many class reunions we are still to celebrate!^^

P.S - So Glad to have shared such reunions with the same special person, Aries. ^^
