Bookish Mardi: Nicholas Sparks' "A Walk to Remember"

“Love is like the wind, you can't see it but you can feel it.”
Nicholas Sparks

Book Summary
Every April, when the wind blows from the sea and mingles with the scent of lilacs, Landon Carter remembers his last year at Beaufort High. It was 1958, and Landon had already dated a girl or two. He even swore that he had once been in love. Certainly the last person in town he thought he'd fall for was Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of the town's Baptist minister.

A quiet girl who always carried a Bible with her schoolbooks, Jamie seemed content living in a world apart from the other teens. She took care of her widowed father, rescued hurt animals, and helped out at the local orphanage. No boy had ever asked her out. Landon would never have dreamed of it.

Then a twist of fate made Jamie his partner for the homecoming dance, and Landon Carter's life would never be the same. Being with Jamie would show him the depths of the human heart and lead him to a decision so stunning it would send him irrevocably on the road to manhood...

Remarkable Lines from the Book

"God is merciful to children, but the children must be worthy as well." - Landon

". . .God is out there watching you, even when you're away from home, and that if you put your trust in God, you'll be alright in the end." - Landon

*a funny line from Landon:
"Me. A bad boy. For eating boiled peanuts in the graveyard. Go figure." :))

"Life, I've learned, is never fair." - Landon

"Gossip id one thing, hurtful is completely another. - Landon

"Who I saw in school is one thing; who I saw after school was completely different and Jamie had never been in my social calendar." - Landon

". . .reading Paul's letters to the Ephesians wasn't nearly as much fun as flirting, if you know what I mean." - Landon

"Jamie was the kind of girl who could pull weeds in someone's garden without being asked or stop traffic to help little kids cross the road. She'd save her allowance to buy a new basketball for the orphans, or she'd turn around and drop the money into the church basket on  Sunday. She was, in other words, the kind of girl who made the rest of us look bad, and whenever she glanced my way, I couldn't help but feel guilty, even though I hadn't done anything wrong." - Landon

"I may be irresponsible, but I'm a nice irresponsible." - Landon

"I know that challenges are always part of God's plan, but I don't want to believe that the Lord is cruel, especially to someone like my father." - Jaime

". . .a guy wants to make a good impression." - Landon

". . .trying to understand teenage boys for her was like trying to decipher the theory of relativity". - Landon

"Sometimes, when you remember the things you used to do, it makes you wince." - Landon

"I know the Lord has a plan for all of us, but sometimes, I don't understand what the message can be." - Jamie

"I don't think that we're meant to understand them all the time. I think that sometimes we just have to have faith." - Landon

"Being in love with a girl like Jamie Sullivan was without a doubt the strangest thing that I'd ever been through. . . but there was something different in the whole way my feelings for her had unfolded." - Landon

". . .when our first lips touched, I knew the memory would last forever." - Landon

"You know it's love when all you want to do is spend the time with the other person, and you sort of know that the other person feels the same way." - Landon

"I was in love, and the feeling was even more wonderful than I ever imagined it could be." - Landon

"People have different reasons." - Landon

"You're a wonderful person, Jamie. You're beautiful, you're kind, you're gentle. . .you're everything that I'd like to be." - Landon

"The Lord can do anything. The Lord listens to our prayers." - Jamie

"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." - Jamie

Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous. Love is never boastful or conceited. It is never rude or selfish. It does not take offense and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in the other people's sins, but delights in the truth. It is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes." - Jamie

". . .miracles can happen." - Jamie
